Royal Pains Review: Dynamic Duos

Started from the bottom, now we're here.

It appears that HankMed is at the top of its game, and Boris solidified it by not only purchasing Hampton's Heritage from Symphony Health Systems and asking them to serve on the hospital's Board of Directors.

And for that reason, Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 12 was an unexpectedly big deal - and one Hank wasn't willing to make.

But should we really be surprised that Hank said no? It was a Board of Directors that almost cost a young boy his life in the Royal Pains pilot.

That wasn't an easy connection to put together, so if there are any more relevant reasons as to why he rejected Boris' offer almost six years later, I am open to suggestions.

Thankfully, this offer means that HankMed will likely have access to the lab facilities it needs now that Boris has purchased the hospital, ending their partnership woes and allowing the concierge service to survive another season.

However, while we wait to find out why Hank rejected the offer, we'll also wonder what happened to Emma.

Yes, it appears Emma is on the lam in her shiny new ride and is not picking up her phone. Is it out of guilt for all the drama she caused since her arrival. Paige and Evan not only followed Emma, but helped her unmask her harasser.

The truth is finally out, and it turns out that Parker is the all powerful and mysterious Oz. Parker tried to get her mom to pay more and quality attention to her, creating SnarkHampton to do it. I have to say, she covered her tracks pretty well by implicating her brother in scandalous activity.

But was anyone else more suspicious of Cinco?

On the Sacdare front - and in case you missed it, this is what all the cool kids are calling the relationship between Jeremiah Sacani and Divya Katdare - it seems their relationship is poised to grow stronger than it was before. And the best part is those aren't my words, they're Jeremiah's. Stay tuned, my friends.

So, Hamptonites, about that bombshell: Did you think Parker was Oz?

No question, Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 12  was an installment full of dynamic duos in action.

Paige and Evan double-teamed Emma to find out the truth about what she's been into and how suspicious she's been acting.

Hank and Emma save Cinco....again.

Divya and Jeremiah treat a boat builder with immense talent, but whose hobby was contributing to his illness.

At the same time, Hank tried to help Charlotte adjust to her first corneal transplant, which entailed more than he bargained for.

What other bombshell dropped during this week's installment? Find out when you watch Royal Pains online.

Royal Pains Season Finale Review: Your Team

Another summer in the Hamptons has come to a close.

But as much as things can change, Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 13 reminded us that plenty of things still say the same.

Royal Pains Season 6 started with Divya celebrating the first birthday of her baby girl, Sashi. And while she spent the season exploring who she is as a woman and a mother, by season's end she was figuring out custody issues with Rafa and running into an old flame.

One can only wonder what it means that both Divya and Rafa find themselves single and reuniting at this particular point. It almost feels like things are coming full circle.

I think that point can be said most definitively for Hank and Evan, who, as they were reminded by little sister Emma, do a great job when they team up. I love watching them reconnect, as it seems like Hank and Evan have been distant from one another and struggling to fall back into a rhythm.

Some of this can be attributed to the fact Hank really does keep what he does with Boris separate, and it certainly didn't help that Hank jet-setted with Boris around the world for the better part of a year at the expense of his relationships with those he left behind. As we know, though, Hank wasted no time trying to rebuild them upon his return, even as he discovered their long-lost sibling.

As for Emma, she realized - thanks to her big brothers - that there are no unforgivable sins among family members and she has acquired full membership as a Lawson! Good to see her trying to reconnect with Eddie on her own terms and that she'll move forward with the love of brothers and many others behind her.

The same is true of Evan and Paige, who ended their marriage counseling with their apparently un-credentialed therapist and are ready to move forward on their own.

One person who isn't quite ready to move on yet is Jeremiah, whose emerging realization of the changes that have taken place within himself caused him to seek Bob out, despite knowing he was without credentials. I absolutely loved getting to watch him grow this season and can't wait to see what else will be in store!

I would be remiss to end this review without a shout-out to the Khloe Kardashian/Scott Disick cameo - which I loved and wanted more of, as well as a big welcome back to Paul VanDyke, who I was hoping could stay around a bit longer.

Overall, a solid way to end the season that included a great moment for Evan and Hank at the end that reminded us that they are a team for life!

That aside, who were you most excited to see this week?

And just like that, another summer season in the Hamptons has come to a close, but it didn't go quietly!

Hank and Evan searched for Emma, only to find out she was with Eddie and her sins were more forgivable than she thought.

Divya was ambushed with custody papers from her estranged baby-daddy, Rafa.

Boris worries about his illness, which is seemingly getting worse.

Jeremiah struggles to adjust to life without Vivianna in it.

Paul VanDyke is back in the Hamptons to give his brother a kidney, Scott Disick and Khloe Kardashian stopped by and one more unexpected guest made an appearance in Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 13.

Royal Pains Season 6: Grade It!

Fashion, fun, romance and intrigue; both domestic and international.

Indeed, Royal Pains Season 6 took us through another eventful summer in the Hamptons with HankMed. Let's take a moment to review and grade past 13 episodes, shall we?

Best Guest Star(s): Hands down, Khloe Kardashian and Scott Disick in Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 13. I don't even care that they only appeared for the better part of 60 seconds. There's just something about seeing those two on Royal Pains that felt right.

Most Growth: This season was Jeremiah Sacani's for the taking. He found a love interest in Vivianna, had a falling out with Divya in Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 9, and by the end of the season, not only had he managed to make up with Divya and begin to deal with the pending loss of Vivianna to her studies in the southwest, he actually sought out an unlicensed therapist to work through his self-recognized growth. Standing ovation for you, Dr. Sacani.

Divya and Hank Pic

Biggest Surprise: I am pretty sure no Hamptonite tuned into Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 1 expecting a bomb to drop that Hank and Evan had a long-lost younger sister. After 5 seasons, one would have thought we knew all there was to know. Lo and behold---we were wrong! So for that reason, the appearance of Emma was this season's biggest surprise.

Best Episode: Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 13 walks away with this category. From Paige and Evan moving on from marriage therapy, Emma going on tour with Eddie, Divya unexpectedly reconnecting with Raj, Jeremiah seeking counseling, to Hank and Evan getting back to what makes them a great team, there was no better way to bring the season to a close than with a great brother-moment in the final minutes of the episode.

Hope for Season 7: Mostly that it gets announced. I know I wasn't the only one wondering what the purpose of Raj showing up in the season finale could possibly be. I feel like the writers have a plan, and I'm totally on board. Other than that, I am open to see where the season takes us!

Grade: B.

Royal Pains to Air Special Transgender Episode

Royal Pains will air a special episode on June 23.

Titled “The Prince of Nucleotides,” the installment will find Hank treating a transgender choreographer whose hormones might be endangering her health.

She will be played by real-life transgender teen Nicole Maines.

Nicole Maines on Royal Pains

"Playing Anna on Royal Pains was an incredible experience and the amount of warmth and encouragement that I received from the cast and crew was so unexpected, but welcome," Maines said via statement.

"Everyone's words were so supportive and kind and they really made me feel part of the cast immediately, and made my very first television acting experience a pleasure - one I will remember forever."

Maines is a 17-year-old high school senior.

She made headlines and history in 2014 after winning a transgender rights case in Maine, as a court ruled students such as herself were permitted to use bathrooms that align with their gender identity.

For the episode, USA Network teamed with PFLAG to raise awareness of individuals who are transgender and to provide support and resources to viewers.

Feuerstein will appear in a PSA that will run during the hour and on social media.

Said producers Michael Rauch and Andrew Lenchewski of this Royal Pains Season  7 installment:

"We are thrilled to be telling the story about Anna, a transgender teen, in this episode of Royal Pains.

"Spreading the word about the complicated issues that arise in identifying as transgendered and about how crucial support from friends and family, and quality healthcare is, in making transitioning less stressful, seemed not only organic to our medical show, but an important story to tell.”

It's tine to shutter the doors on the awesome Hamptons estate.

USA Network confirmed Royal Pains Season 8 will be the last. The eight-episode final season will begin Wednesday, May 18th at 10/9c.

Royal Pains

“Under the direction of talented showrunners Michael Rauch and Andrew Lenchewski, our entire ensemble cast led by Mark Feuerstein, and amazing crew, Royal Pains took viewers on a remarkable, unforgettable journey for eight wonderful seasons,” NBCUniversal Entertainment Networks president Chris McCumber said.

“While summer in the Hamptons may never be the same, this last season promises to be an epic ride.”

Creator and executive producer Andrew Lenchewski and executive producer Michael Rauch issued a joint statement in which they said the following:

"It's with great sadness, but even greater thankfulness, that we prepare for our final summer sunsets as Royal Pains comes to an end. We couldn't have imagined a more talented and dedicated writers' room, cast, or crew, and we couldn't have asked for better partners than USA Network and Universal Cable Productions.”

“We want to thank Bonnie Hammer, Chris McCumber, Jeff Wachtel and every other member of our network and studio family for tirelessly supporting us over eight magical seasons, and more importantly, for giving us the opportunity to complete this series on our own terms. We'll always have The Hamptons."

Mark Feuerstein has already claimed his next role. He'll be playing Sarah Wayne Callies husband on the Prison Break revival.

Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 1 Review: Stranger Danger

The HankMed crew was back in Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 1 and this final season leaves us with lots of questions.

Will Evan and Paige have a baby? Will Divya become a doctor?

Will Hank ever get a new car?

Yes, I know how much he loves that Saab, but that car must be close to 20 years old. Perhaps it’s time to move on.

But the biggest question will be whether or not Hank can break through his romantic paralysis. So far, it isn’t going well.

I just don’t feel any chemistry between him and nurse Jenn, so I really wasn’t upset when he tried to break things off with her, even if the reason about protecting her son was seriously lame.

Life just keeps throwing us curve balls, doesn’t it? Curve balls filled with anxiety.

Hank

Hank needs to stop thinking so much. Perhaps if he concentrates on the rest of his life, love will find him when it’s ready. Let’s just hope it’s ready within the next seven episodes.

The biggest shocker of the hour wasn’t Eddie running out on his wedding – that was almost expected – but Divya being pregnant, again!

I was hoping she’d move on from Raj after Royal Pains season 7, but instead it appears she went all in. So Raj has twins with his ex-wife, Divya has her daughter, and now the two of them are having a baby. Talk about instant family!

Divya’s determined to go to medical school to become a doctor, but that’s certainly going to be a challenge with so many little ones underfoot. Will she still be working for HankMed? I don’t think there’s enough hours in a day to get it all done.

Despite Eddie bailing on the affair, the wedding planning did give us a few good moments, such as this Royal Pains quote

Divya: I'm not worried about finding something fancy. I am worried about finding something I can fit in to.
Evan: I actually have an old camping tent you can borrow if you like.

I do love how these characters have become family. During Royal Pains season 1, I thought that Divya and Evan had potential as a couple, but they are so much better as pseudo brother and sister.

Besides, Evan and Paige are absolutely perfect together. This show needed a solid couple and they found them in these two. Even with their fertility challenges, they never fail to face them together with love and humor.

Me and my underdog sperm will by right here when you get back, screening the movie Rudy for inspiration.

Evan

I just want to hug them both.

Jeremiah was also back, thank goodness. I really enjoy him. When he told Hank and Evan that he’d ask his visiting parents to leave the hospital, I literally laughed out loud because his deadpan delivery was simply perfect.

I loved it when he walked out of the house with the kids and the iguana. It was just too much for him, and I didn’t blame him for a second.

Speaking of those kids, I’m guessing the aunt is MIA, and they’re basically on their own, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they make another appearance. I’m curious which doctor at HankMed will come to their rescue. I’d love to see Jeremiah find a way to help.

It’s wonderful to see these old friends back again enjoying the summer sun of the Hamptons. Something tells me that much like the summer, Royal Pains season 8 is going to fly by much too quickly.

Let me know who is your favorite member of HankMed, and check back next Wednesday for my review of Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 2.

What is Eddie's big surprise?

That was revealed on Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 1 and it didn't quite get the reception from and Hank and Evan that he hoped it would.

Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 2 Review: Palpating the Orbital Rim

Even with a hacker infiltrating the records of Hamptons Heritage, it turned out that family relations were the real challenge in Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 2

But the truth is that the family relationships are what makes this series so special.

My favorite was Jeremiah and his strained relations with his parents. As he explained to Divya in this Royal Pains quote

We've never really been close, even when I was little. That's why they have dogs.

Jeremiah

On top of all his other struggles, Jeremiah truly believed his parents had always had dogs because they needed affection and couldn’t get it from him. When he told that to Divya, I wanted to cry for what a lonely little boy he must have been.

Thankfully, some of that loneliness has changed. Jeremiah now has real friends, especially Divya who never gave up on trying to pull this family closer together.

Hank: Families can be like magnets. The more you try to push them together, the more they slide apart.
Divya: Unless you turn them around.

I know that Jeremiah has always had a crush on Divya, but he appears to have made peace with that now that she’s married to Raj. Perhaps their friendship will be a stepping stone to him eventually finding a love of his own someday. I don’t know that we’ll get to see that with only six more episodes left in the series, but I’m optimistic that we’ll at least be left with some hope that Jeremiah won’t be alone.

Jeremiah learning that his perspective about the dog was completely wrong was another tear jerker moment. His parents got their first dog for him, because he didn’t have siblings, and at five years old he read the gesture all wrong.

Jeremiah: I thought you'd given up on me.
Barbara: No Jerry, not then, not ever.

I look forward to seeing Jeremiah trying to rear an adorable, handful of a puppy. That could be a lot of fun.

Elsewhere, Evan was getting chewed out by both Boris and Diana Underhill concerning the hack on the hospital’s computer systems and Damn! It’s not like the guy caused it, and it’s not as though Evan could put the genie back in the bottle after the hack took place. What exactly did they expect him to do?

If your head needs to roll, I will be the one to drop the blade.

Boris

Hank immediately felt he had to swoop in to help his little brother. Despite their brotherly spat, Hank eventually realized that his knee jerk reaction to protect Evan was no longer necessary which highlighted just how much these brothers have grown, even if their father has not.

I loved how Evan handled Diana Underhill. Where Hank would have been affronted and wanted justice, Evan was far more practical. He was willing to let her play her game, as long as he and his hospital ended up looking like heroes instead of villains.

Even Boris had the decency to apologize to Evan and admit that he’s worried about his son, so I suppose Evan seems to be on a roll. I only hope that Paige comes back soon.

Hank’s case of the week completely freaked me out because of those creepy contact lenses. I’ve got an eye phobia to begin with so I cringed and tuned away every time they showed Rachel wearing those things on screen.

Hank and Jan finally went on a real date and just as I’d suspected from the moment they met, it crashed and burned. These two have absolutely no chemistry! This entire relationship has been nothing more than filler. I only hope it’s leading Hank somewhere.

Boris is definitely leading Hank somewhere…out of town. When he asked Hank to go with him to see Carlos, I thought they’d be headed to Argentina again, but this time they’re off to Hong Kong.

I just hope the trip doesn’t last too long. I always prefer it when Royal Pains sticks to its roots in the Hamptons.

Did Hank and Jen's date go well?

That was a huge question on Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 2 when they finally went on the date.

Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 3 Review: Fly Me to Kowloon

$
0
0

Things weren’t what they seemed on Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 3 as Hank flew off to Hong Kong on a mysterious mission with Boris.

I’m still not entirely sure I understood it all.

Finding Romance - Royal Pains

Boris was announcing that his company had developed a drug to combat his genetic disease, but up until this point it appears he’s been successful at keeping his disease under wraps.

Was it the competition for the drug itself that was driving all of the conspiracy theories? What does some foreign entity want with Boris’ DNA?

I loved it when Boris used Guy’s own son as the switch for Carlos. Talk about a way to knock a man off balance and show him just how vulnerable he is, even if Boris meant the child no harm.

However, I was shocked when Boris appeared to hand over that blood sample so readily and relieved when that turned out not to be the case…but I doubt it will take whomever is after Boris’ DNA  to figure out that the sample isn’t his.

Boris obviously has some idea who is after him, even though he’s hoping his prediction is wrong. That means it must be someone close to him; someone he thought he could trust.

There are so few people in Boris’ inner circle that I find the thought that one of them would go so far as to try to steal blood from the man’s child truly disheartening.

For a while I wondered if Amy Chang was the mole and just playing Hank in order to get information on Boris. Considering how quickly she ended up in bed with Hank, it wouldn’t have surprised me but I suppose her character was nothing more than a ruse all along…and a way for Hank to realize that he’s looking for more than just another fling.

Hank knows that he wants a real relationship and he’s not willing to settle for a half hearted effort from himself or someone else. That’s progress.

It was great to see Paige back and I loved it when she and Divya’s plan completely backfired on them. Raj recounting his experience with invitro fertilization was both truthful and comical, even if it wasn’t what Paige had hoped to hear.

When Evan said he had already decided that he was willing to try IVF, Paige was dumbfounded and asked him why he hadn’t said anything sooner.

His response in this Royal Pains quote was every reason why I love Evan Lawson…

You're the one who's going to have to take all the drugs and have the procedures. This one had to be your call.

Evan

One question though, how does Paige stay so thin if she bakes that much whenever she’s upset? Does she not eat any of it because it all looked amazingly delicious!

In other news, Jeremiah was completely MIA in this episode and I missed him.

On the upside, Divya’s pilot patient was super cute, although I could have lived without him cutting off his own finger. I had to look away or risk passing out the same way he did.

Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 4 Review: Doubt of Africa

House Call Hank became Hospital Hank in Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 4, but the transition did not go smoothly.

Actually, having Hank jump back into the ER went much easier than I expected. Hank is a bit of an adrenaline junkie when it comes to medicine, and in that way, the ER suits him.

However, I had to laugh when he ordered cardboard and electrical tape to fix a patient’s heart pump. It’s like he’s the MacGyver of the ER. Is there no problem that Dr. Hank Lawson can’t fix?

Jill Returns - Royal Pains

But that’s part of the fun of this show; you always know that Hank will save the day. Where other shows can be dark and disturbing, it’s reassuring to know that things will always be sunny in the Hamptons.

Hank’s biggest issue was working with his brother, and there’s always been a respect issue between these two. Evan has come such a long way since Royal Pains Season 1. He wears many hats, both at HankMed and at the hospital, and he’s been successful, in varying degrees, in them all.

Yet, Hank rarely seems to acknowledge that. I think that’s somewhat normal given their brotherly dynamic, but I can understand how it would bug the heck out of Evan.

Evan may have been overly cautious in calling the quarantine on Hans, but that doesn’t mean he was wrong. Even though Hans didn’t have Ebola, Evan still saved him from getting on a plane and having his infection get worse while in flight. Hank never seemed to see that Evan’s actions may have saved Hans’ life.

Jill’s return was both hopeful and disheartening. It was great to see Jill back. Not only have I always enjoyed the character, but I also rooted for her and Hank as a couple.

Obviously, Hank still has feelings for Jill, but is this Royal Pains quote the closest we’ll ever see him get to expressing them?

Jill: I thought you weren't worried about Hans.
Hank: I'm not, but I'm worried about you.

Hank’s obvious jealousy over Hans was wonderfully fun as Jill relayed all of Hans’ heroics in Africa. The man saved entire villages, including the goats! And how does one man react in hearing that another’s name is translated as Dr. Big One?

It was Hank’s dead pan responses that made me laugh, such as when Hans explained how he got the metal plate in his cheek…

Hans: I hit my face on the ice and broke the floor of my eye socket. I was saving my little brother when he fell through.
Hank: Of course you were.

But Hank truly believed that Jill and Hans were a couple. When he found out that Hans was gay just as Jill’s car pulled away, his expression was one of regret and longing. What would he have done differently had he known the truth? Would he have tried to get Jill to stay?

You'll end up where you're suppose to be, what matters is that you're taking the leap.

Jill

Hank seems to be the one character who hasn’t figured out in which direction to take that leap. Let’s hope he figures it out soon.

Back at Hamptons Heritage, Lena and her two brothers returned, much as I expected they would. I’m not sure where this is headed, but I like that Evan is now involved in their story. He brings a different perspective to their plight.

Jeremiah was back and ended up forming a bond with his latest patient, who happened to be his favorite recluse author. I just love Jeremiah and how far he’s come. His reactions to people never fail to make me smile, and I’d love for him to be able to find love. Will he find that with Cindy Green before the series concludes?

Nothing would make me happier.

How did Hank slip back into his old life?

That's a key question on Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 4 when he worked on the ER for the first time in years and has difficulty following Evan's orders.

Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 5 Review: Saab Story

Everyone has a trigger that propels them to change things and move forward but up until Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 5, Hank Lawson hadn’t found his.

Oddly enough, the person who propelled Hank forward was Ken Keller. Who would have guessed that?

Baby Shower - Royal Pains

Keller literally ran back into Hank’s life…and his living room, in the middle of heart failure. Keller has always looked at the world as a fight for survival, with him coming out on top; that's why his health issues were quite the shock…

So I'm the wounded antelope instead of the lion?

Keller

But it was Keller’s need to always be on top that lead to his downfall, having injected himself with steroids to look good enough to stand next to a 20-something competitor at a photo shoot. If that wasn’t silly enough, he hid the information from Hank because he didn’t want to hear the I told you so.

The man almost died because his giant ego wouldn’t let him admit he’d done something so stupid to avoid looking old and it appeared to be Hank’s tenacity as much as his medical knowledge that brought him back.

Ken Keller's not going to die. Not on my floor and not in my sweats.

Hank

Ken Keller’s entire story was a way to set up Hank to take a new look at his life. As Keller pointed out to him in this Royal Pains quote

You haven't settled in at all since you started HankMed. You've got no possessions, no mortgage, no girlfriend, no boss. You've got nothing.

Keller

Evan’s gotten married, started new business ventures, moved into a house and is trying to start a family. Divya’s started a family and is moving on to medical school (we hope!). But Hank has remained oddly stuck in place.

He’s even still driving the Saab 900 that his mentor sold to him years ago.

It’s about time Hank moved forward in his life, and it’s taken him 8 seasons to realize it. But what is it that’s been holding Hank back? I’m hoping we dive into more of that before the series ends.

Elsewhere, Evan and Paige moved forward with the IVF and just when I thought Evan finally had it all together, he did something incredibly stupid like telling his wife that her chemically induced hormonal symptoms were all in her head.

He’s lucky Paige is so nice because some women I know might have punched him and told him his bloody nose was all in his head.

Despite his occasional shortcomings, Evan is a really great guy who adores his wife. He even manned up to give her the trigger shot…he just couldn’t stop himself from passing out afterwards.

Once they got Ken Keller up off the floor, Divya’s surprise baby shower continued. I loved that Jeremiah was the president of his a/v club in school, and that video he made almost had me in tears. Divya’s son is incredibly loved, and he’s not even here yet.

On a side note, I never thought of myself as super geeky but it was Jeremiah’s portion of the video that made me laugh out loud…

Radiation isn't a play thing but a half life is better than no life at all.

Jeremiah

As wonderful as it all was, I was shocked that Divya decided to dig her heels in about Johns Hopkins. I know it's a great medical school but is going there worth postponing her dream for yet another year?

I was hoping that watching that video would make her realize what an amazing and loving group of friends she has in the Hamptons and how much her family will need their support as she takes on the challenge of med school.

Obviously, Divya and I see this situation differently.

Only three more episodes left! Check back next week for my review of Royal Pains Season 8 Episode 6 and if you can’t wait for more, you can watch Royal Pains online here at TV Fanatic
