Royal Pains Review: Hashtag Confused

$

The episode title said it all, as once this latest installment of Royal Pains concluded, I was definitely sitting on "Pins and Needles" - and not in an enjoyable way.

From a completely misleading promo to an inexplicable encounter between Milos and Boris, I'm at a complete loss as to what's happening to this flailing summer favorite.

The Great Debate

Let's start with my confusion over the promo for this week's episode. Let's be honest, a disproportionate emphasis was placed on the idea that Hank's apparently ongoing struggle with post-trauma pain was going to threaten Evan's campaign. From my understanding, it was supposed to be a prominent feature of this hour, which it certainly was not.

I likely would have been appalled had the promotional interpretation come to fruition, however, as there have only been one or two scenes over the course of nine episodes that have alluded to Hank's need to use Hydrocodone to sideline some of his pain. These scenes were could have been interpreted in two ways:

  1. Hank really does have an emerging addiction that he's trying to mask.
  2. Hank's secrecy is his way of proving to everyone that he's back to normal, despite insisting on returning to work before he was completely healed and managing his pain appropriately.

Either way, they really haven't warranted the problems that will seemingly follow.

Another unwarranted plot point involved Paige's quick jealousy over Divya coaching Evan for his debate. Wasn't it Paige herself who wished to distance herself from politics, including her hubby's campaign? She has something better to do now anyway with her new internship. She's really got a knack for this whole art thing.

If there's one thing about Divya and Evan that's beyond well established, it's their status as BFFLs. Seriously, they've had a love-hate relationship from the beginning and a real tendency to become joined at the hip on things they mutually adore, underdogs included.

My only request is that Paige either release her jealousy or address it head on so as not to add additional and unnecessary pettiness to the mix. There's already enough funny business taking place in the Hamptons as it is. And I'm not referring to Evan's Red Hat Club fail either.

What was with Boris feeding Milos' delusions about the elixir and the time piece? The man is in a hospital trying to heal. I know he's probably curious as to what's fueling Milos' delusions. Then again, we know there's a genetic disorder his family suffers from, all of which rob its victims of time. Doesn't this obviously read as a psychological hangup Milos could be suffering from? Definitely disappointed we didn't put this craziness at the end of "Hammertime."

Are you as confused by all the plot changes and twists? Do you think Royal Pains Season 5 can get back on track?

Royal Pains Review: Birthday Wish

My birthday wish for "Game of Phones" was an episode that delivered on its promises, along with a compelling storyline.

Better luck next year, Royal Pains?

Travel to Italy

I guess that's not much different than the huge bag of nothing that Evan received for his big day. Then again, it was very much his own fault. Evan's grandiose expectations cut him off at the knees before he even got up to walk.

Shouldn't someone have caught on to his constant repetition of Divya's words about going to Tuscany in the first place? I don't think it could have been any more obvious that he was trying to hint at something.

If I had to sum up what happened in this episode, it's that everyone, to some extent, got really caught up in their own stuff, from Evan's self-obsession to Hank's drug problem to Paige's jealousy and even Divya's pregnancy... they all had very self-interested moments.

Paige's was probably the most ridiculous, only to be overshadowed by Evan's Tuscan-inspired expectations. The fact she thinks, though hasn't really admitted, that she believes there's something going on between Evan and Divya is absolutely absurd. I have never seen a couple's honeymoon period end so abruptly. Please get this makeup over with quickly. Paige married someone who infamously puts his foot in his mouth; she should automatically consider that any time there's an issue between them. It would save them a lot of misunderstanding and us as the audience a lot of wasted story lines.

Divya's story this week was one I really enjoyed. And by enjoyed, I mean all of the parts that did not include Evan. I thought the renewed relationship between Divya and her mother and their discussion about motherhood was really nice. I was kind of surprised that her mom dropped a pending engagement in Divya's lap, but it went okay with the theme of big secrets going on there and evened things out nicely in that way.

Once again, I harp on the fact that the whole Hank-the-pain-killer-addict thing didn't pan out in either a confession or a test proving such is the case, as the promo somewhat mistakenly promised. No, not all promos are supposed to spill the beans or promise certain things will come to pass, but when will we finally address and deal with Hank's clear problem.

Perhaps next week? What did you think of this installment?

Royal Pains Review: Signals Crossed

I would like to extend an "Open Invitation" to the writers of Royal Pains to go back to the drawing board as they prepare for and film the next season of this flailing summer favorite.

Yes, this episode had some redeeming features, but it's a hard sell for me to believe they can turn this runaway train around with only two episodes left in Royal Pains Season 5.

Eddie's Back

If there's one aspect of the hour that I still am not completely sure I understood, or am understanding, it's Hank's need to continue treating Don. Why does he feel responsible for him, beyond the fact he promised his spoiled and rather immature daughter that he wouldn't allow anything bad to happen to him?

Neither Hank nor Mollie ever left his side for more time than was absolutely necessary. To be quite honest, I don't know many doctors who would do such a thing, real or fictional. She should have been grateful he didn't just leave her sit there to be bombarded with medical speak she didn't understand with respect to her father's treatment.

I'm not completely heartless as to not comprehend her desire to be at her father's side, nor that it's very scary and sometime people act out when they're afraid. But let's be real, her attitude totally stinks. I would not have tolerated beyond my first encounter with her. Seriously.

Hank's attitude towards his addiction was lingering dangerously close to a similar level of immaturity. Then again, when you're body is in pain and, even as a trained medical professional, you're misinterpreting the signs, I almost understand where he was coming from and am ready to grant his behavior reprieve.

One highlight of this installment had to be Divya and Jeremiah's initial encounter where they discussed the merits of a breakfast room. If I wasn't so convinced that the feelings Jeremiah has for Divya were one-sided, I would have loved to see these two really hit it off.

It seems strange to me that all the hoops Jeremiah has jumped through, right down to inviting her to move in, didn't raise any red flags that would have caused her to question Jeremiah's intentions. Though I suppose pregnancy and all the internal and external stresses of that have likely occupied spaces her in mind she didn't even know existed, effectively silencing any questioning of that nature.

Was anyone else feeling especially hurt for Jeremiah when Divya approached him about moving out and delaying her breathing exercise classes? I mean, I think I would be a little off-put to suddenly learn my roommate was head-over-heels for me, too. But did she have to rush to judgment on the thing so quickly?

Maybe I am just shipping something that should not and cannot exist. But seriously, I've grown really attached to our resident awkward physician. I think he deserves to be happy.

So do Evan and Paige for that matter. Given his behavior, I wasn't so sure Eddie R. felt the same. What on earth would possess him to fabricate or intimate feelings between Divya and Evan that may or may not have ever existed? I am still in the camp that says Evan had a baby crush on Divya when the series started. Yet when you have the parties involved are refuting your claims in stereo, one would assume it would behoove the accuser to rethink their position. For Eddie R., that just wasn't so.

I did appreciate his observation, once all was said and done, that it was never Divya that was the problem. Now it's just a matter of figuring out the source of Paige and Evan's marital troubles, and we might finally get back on track to marital bliss for our resident love birds.

By the way, did anyone else wonder what was happening on Evan's campaign? Yeah, about that....

Two episodes left, Hamptonites. Do you think this show can be rehabilitated?

Royal Pains Review: Results

"A Trismus Story" had a lot of potential from the outset. And with only one more episode remaining this season, I expected a lot from this Royal Pains installment.

Unfortunately for the plot, there may be a lot left to resolve come Season 6.

Surviving the Mudslingers

I was seriously glad to see the election plot come to a close. It's cycled in and out of the story line since early on in the season and with so little time left for resolution, they really had no choice but to have the Hamptonites cast their ballots.

Was anyone else kind of surprised that they had Evan lose the election, only to have his arch enemy Blythe Ballard force a recount of the library ballots and declare him the winner? I guess somewhere along the line the writers decided that the part where Evan and Paige's apparently null and void marriage was falling apart was a lot more interesting than having Evan have to face the fact he didn't win the election.

Quite honestly, I was a little thrown that after a two-hour Royal Pains Wedding Special they would thrown in a random clause that voided their wedding like that. Do they plan on having Evan and Paige take a break next season? The show was renewed for two seasons. It's very likely they could have planned that part of the arc to extend over both seasons.

Then again, I really thought they had resolved Paige's jealousy issues in "Open Invitation" when they had their little chat that unwittingly revealed to Paige that Jeremiah was in love with Divya, which Divya overheard.

That was another plot point I was expecting a heck of a lot from in this episode, especially when Divya tried to approach Hank about any recent changes in feelings towards things on Jeremiah's part. I honestly thought Jeremiah was going to sit Divya down and put his new assertive attitude to work. It was more disappointing than I thought it would be once the episode drew to a close. Then he abruptly resigned from HankMed. What a shocker.

The other true surprise was seeing Jeremiah on the verge of tears. We rarely see visible emotion from this man. The fact he not only opened up to Divya, but actually showed some real emotion spoke volumes about Jeremiah's growth since joining HankMed - if only that growth included a relationship with Divya! I won't back down on the possibility until either one of them ends up married. I just won't. It's one of the only things that keeps bringing me back to watch each week!

One thing I'm not really coming back each week for is this diluted and overdrawn addiction Hank possesses. I don't quite understand why it's seemingly becoming a federal case when no charges have been filed and it turned out that Mollie's vindictiveness is actually the function of a medical condition she was suffering from. I can't wait till she wakes up and stops being such a brat!

So much to resolve, and so little time to resolve it all in!

What do you think the Royal Pains Season 5 has in store for us?

Royal Pains Season Finale Review: Time to Unwind

$
0
0

Another summer in the Hamptons has finally come to a close.

And while I've had "Bones to Pick" with this season of Royal Pains since its outset, I can honestly say that this ending has probably been one of my favorites of the entire series.

Divya in Crisis

What made the Royal Pains Season 5 finale stand out?

It all comes down to what we got to see from Jeremiah, who I've had my eye on this entire season due to his more prominent character growth. From his deepening feelings for Divya to his recent falling out with Hank, he's really come into his own as an individual. That's probably the best move that could be made by the writers, considering the fact he's now in charge of HankMed. I don't think I would have bought him becoming head honcho in the same state in which he started the season.

Even so, I can't say I'm not a little disappointed that Divya and Jeremiah decided to keep their relationship in the friend zone. I suppose that's because, as I've said over and over again, this couple is too cute to pass on. I mean, their final shot together in the finale was the two of them chilling by the pool each reading a book. I can't you guys, I just can't.

But was anyone else a little terrified that Divya might have to give birth to that baby early, or, even worse, might lose it? Definitely would have been a little dark and perhaps a little over-dramatic, but when you weren't really sure where they were going with Divya and Jeremiah and that dynamic, it might have been worth the risk in storytelling to make it happen. I'm just glad the writers took the route they did.

Another thing I really appreciated about this finale were some of the twists. We've seen Paige and Evan's romance sour a bit over the course of the season, no doubt a result of all the things that have kept them from focusing on their relationship; like Hank's surgery and Evan's campaign to name a pair.

It really came down to the last second to see whether or not those two would proceed in signing their marriage papers and redo-ing their vows or take a legit break. Glad to know these lovebirds are going to have some time to focus on each other and return next season perhaps stronger than ever.

Let's hope Hank returns next season in a better state than he left as well. Though I suppose I would return in a lot better state of mind if I had gone on a world tour all year. That was the other twist which I kind of liked. Him leaving Jeremiah in charge was pretty epic. I hope it goes a long way in repairing their friendship. Let's hope some time away provides clarity for our favorite in-house physician.

What was your favorite part of the summer finale? What do you think next season might have in store for our favorite Hamptonites?

Royal Pains Season 5 Report Card: Grade It!

Coming off a rocky summer season, Royal Pains certainly featured its ups, down and all-arounds.

From plot lines the series could have gone without to others that left viewers confounded, let’s take a look back at the pros and cons of Royal Pains Season 5... TV Fanatic Report Card style!

Hank and Evan on Season 5

Best Episode: Tie between the season premiere “Hankwatch” and the season finale “Bones to Pick.” Royal Pains started off strong and ended strong as well. From the main plot line setups to their apparent conclusions - or at least their temporary states going into season 6 - all was well that ended well. If only we could have drawn a straight line from beginning to end and avoided all the detours!

Worst Plot Line: While I really enjoyed “Hammertime” and the orchestrated auction, I really disliked - and still fail to see the purpose of - the relationship between Milos and Boris and why we had to see it through to its very abrupt apparent resolution.

Most Character Growth: Jeremiah, no question.  As I mentioned in my review of “Bones to Pick,” it was a nice move by the writers to have taken time exploring Jeremiah’s personality and watch him grow into the more confident person he was at the end of season 5. Otherwise, I would not have believed Hank handing the practice over to Jeremiah in his absence.

Best Hamptons Outting: Didn't actually take place in the Hamptons, but all the way in Tuscany, when Evan and Divya crossed the pond to visit Divya's mother and her new beau. Too bad Evan thought it was a birthday surprise.

Least Likely Medical Injury: I know I couldn't have been the only one who looked at the screen cross-eyed when the lone naysayer at one of Evan's first campaign events was impaled by a lawn umbrella. The chances of that ever happening have to be between zero and never.

Hopes for Season 6: More exploration of the relationship between Jeremiah and Divya; the birth of her baby; more compelling, uninterrupted story lines; a less whiny and juvenile Evan.

Overall Grade: C.

Now it's YOUR turn, TV Fanatics: What grade would you give Royal Pains Season 5?

Royal Pains Review: On Second Thought

"Chock Full O' Nuts" is probably the best way to describe this season of Royal Pains as it stands in its seventh installment of season 5.

From Hank having to juggle his undercover clinical trial with the Symphony merger to Divya navigating her new living situation and Paige and Evan getting into their first marital spat, this episode continued the trend of incompleteness that's haunted this season since the Royal Pains Season 5 premiere.

Spinning Towards Health

I really liked that the hour started out with Divya raiding Jeremiah's fridge. I almost thought for a second she was going to be drowning her pregnancy cravings in a carton of Ben & Jerry's or something. But, in true Divya fashion, she only wanted some tea.

A part of me wishes I could explain how much I really do adore the idea of Jeremiah and Divya. They have grown on me as a romantic possibility. The thing is, I'm not sure that Divya even still really fathoms that he's the slightest bit interested in her, let alone completely and stupidly in love. I mean, the minute Jeremiah took the bookend out of his bookshelf, a genius point on the part of the writers, I was like "He wants to marry Divya, he's pushed so far out of his comfort zone for her." Props to Mark Feuerstein for the way that scene was shot and played out.

You'll probably think I'm way ahead of the game, but the more the storyline trends towards these two getting closer together, I can see Divya and Jeremiah finally having a talk, or Evan somehow getting involved to make the thing move forward. It's exciting in the midst of Divya's pregnancy and the circumstances.

That said, did anyone catch that weird moment when Divya was super excited with Hank about her walk-in closet nursery? First of all, who owns a closet big enough to make a nursery out of? Second, did anyone else think the way she acted was completely out of character? So. Weird.

Another thing I thought was interesting was the fact that Hank was so gung-ho about the merger with Symphony. Not only was he on board, he hired Ken and yelled at him and Shelby Shackleford to come up with a deal. Of course, they also shacked up in the process. But apparently the only thing important was that they came up with a reasonable agreement.

Point is, doesn't the fact HankMed has officially joined Symphony cancel out Evan's run for public office? If they sign on to work in the confines of the hospital, they don't have to rely on the zoning laws that caused them to cross paths with Blythe Ballard in the first place? Way to leave that unaddressed.

The redeeming part of this reality is that it allowed Evan and Paige to have their first marital spat over a pricy piece of art, which did more for individual character growth than a campaign rally could have ever done. Paige and Evan really do have a marriage one might wish to aspire after. I love that Evan went and bought the piece back for Paige.

What I did not love about this episode was the fact that this whole Boris/Milosh business is still lurking around in the background. And now next week Hank is going to be in the crosshairs of a seemingly rogue Russian? Not sure how I feel about that, or how qualified Hank even is to be dealing with something of that nature. This plot line really is starting to get weird and overdone. But, alas, we have no choice but to have it dominate the upcoming installment.

What was your favorite part of this week's episode? Is the Divya/Jeremiah relationship growing on you?

They may appear on some of our favorite shows, and they may even have their shining moments.

Overall, though, they sort of make us want to throw our television sets out the window.

It's rarely the faults of the actors or actresses behind these characters, it's just that they don't belong on the show in the first place. Or they're worn out their welcome. Or they just... won't... stop.... whining.

These irritating individuals are lawyers, witches and super agents; they are young and they are old. But they have one thing in common:

They are super annoying! Flip through the following photo gallery and decide if you agree with us and/or who you would add to this list from across the TV dial:

Royal Pains Review: The New Normal

Summer is always officially back in session when Royal Pains returns to USA Network.

It's been a long winter for our favorite Hamptons crew, wrought with growth and change fully on display in Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 1.

Coming back to the Hamptons, you almost wouldn't recognize HankMed!

Divya had her baby, Evan and Paige have clearly gone to marriage therapy and Jeremiah... well, he's just Jeremiah!

The team was clearly able to hold down the fort in Hank's globetrotting absence and the cohesion formed between Jeremiah, Divya, Evan and Paige is evident.

If you'll remember from Royal Pains Season 5, Divya and Jeremiah became roommates, with the latter vowing to help her through her pregnancy. I reveled in all the times Jeremiah tended to Divya, either without her having to ask or informing others of her pregnancy and delivery plans.

Striking, also, was the distinct step away from the seemingly romantic tension that permeated the relationship between Jeremiah and Divya, no doubt likely a result of their cohabitation. I can't say I missed it all that much in the grand scheme of things, but  it certainly caught my attention!

The romance was far from missing between Evan and Paige, who suffered some early marital struggles in Season 5. Therapy has seemed to do them wonders, as I never thought I'd see the day Evan offered to help decorate headbands!

It's clear that Hank's absence took a bit of a toll on Evan, but it seems like his growing relationship with Paige and his love for the new addition, Sashi, certainly helped him pull through.

Hank was feeling like the odd man out with his namesake company colleagues. You had to think he would have expected things to change rather drastically without him there for the day-to-day, but somehow it still seemed to take Hank by surprise.

I have to say it made me a little upset. I'm not even upset that they thought it necessary to explore how Hank would respond to exiting the scene for a bit, but really over the fact that he left it for another one of Boris' shall-not-be-named purposes.

It's just getting a little overplayed and I'm not sure that the so called "objectives" Boris so desperately wanted Hank to participate in will contribute to his personal growth in any way. That's frustrating from a storytelling perspective and has me asking "So what?" as a viewer.

That point aside, it was really nice to see Hank using a guitar strap and the neck of an electric guitar for medical purposes again. Welcome home, Hank!

Also, a shout-out to Bethanny Frankel for her cameo. I'm not sure what it was about... but I'll take it!

So, whose story are you most excited to watch unfold this season?

Summer is definitely back in session when Royal Pains comes back to USA.

And in Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 1, also known as "Smoke and MIrrors," everything has changed.

Divya is a mom to a beautiful baby girl. Evan and Paige are growing in their marriage. And Jeremiah? Well maybe he's the one thing that hasn't changed!

Back from jet-setting across the globe with Boris for reasons unknown, Hank begins to seriously consider whether the globe-trotting life is for him. It certainly helped his decision along to treat a patient who feared his genetic disease had finally caught up with him.

But before you think this was just another episode, a young girl named Emma has made her way to the Hamptons in search of her father!

It's been a long winter for our favorite Hamptons crew, but you can catch up with their first foray back when you watch Royal Pains online.

Just when you thought you'd seen all the family drama Royal Pains had to offer, it comes along and proves that there's still more to learn about the Lawson brothers.

Add to that Jeremiah on the verge of a breakdown over the baby and Hank treating some tennis pros and you've got Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 2.

I'm not gonna lie, I truly thought that Emma was going to end up some long lost child of Boris'. I mean, what else could Hank have meant in Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 1 when he said he had heard a lot about her?

I guess he was referring to her party crashing rather than some sordid history relayed to him by Boris.

So consider me floored when it was revealed she was a long-lost sister of the Lawson siblings ! I'm with Hank, how could we have gone this long with no mention of her whatsoever?

Perhaps we should take a cue from Eddie R's rather rude interaction with Emma in the final minutes of the episode. It seems he has a serious bone to pick with Emma's mother, Meredith. Can't wait to see what that's all about.

On the other hand, we've gotten the opportunity to learn a little bit about Emma.

She's a hardworking young lady with a strong desire to prove herself and is even manager of a restaurant back in her hometown of St. Louis. She clearly has a lot of growing up to do, but her arrival should make for some interesting times moving forward should she become a permanent fixture in the Hamptons this summer.

And speaking of permanent fixtures... it seems Jeremiah is beginning to slightly dread the semi-permanent fixtures residing with him, mainly Divya and little Sashi.

I almost couldn't handle it when he retreated to the basement and screamed into a pillow. It's rare to catch Jeremiah emoting, so I'm starting to wonder if this season won't signal a turning point in that aspect of Jeremiah's personality.

Another shift that looks like it's going to stick is the better relationship between Paige and Evan, which got tested a little at the news of an unknown sibling. They managed to work through it with the help of their rather entertaining therapist, who I look forward to seeing more of!

Overall, it was a pretty solid installment with a lot to offer moving into next week.

But I have to ask, given Eddie's reaction, is Emma friend or foe?

Hank and Evan have a sister?!

Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about the Lawson clan, Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 2 proved us all wrong!

Party crasher, Emma, is really another Lawson, who recognized her parentage as a result of Eddie R's book. But when Eddie R. shows up to the Hamptons, the greeting is pretty cold and there could be more to her arrival than meets the eye.

Even so, that didn't stop Paige and Evan from trying to get to know her a little better, or Hank from getting on board with the idea as well!

At the same time, Hank treats a few tennis pros and Jeremiah starts seeking refuge from his house guests at a local bar during the day.

A Broadway star is coming to the Hamptons - and he's going to need some medical help! STAT!

Singer/actor Cheyenne Jackson (best known to TV audiences as Danny on 30 Rock) will stop by Royal Pains Season 6 later this summer, TV Fanatic has learned exclusively.

Liz and Danny

In the episode - titled "Oh, M.G." and airing August 5 - Jackson will portray Sam, the owner of a custom perfumery who loses his sense of smell and finds his career jeopardized. Look for him to seek out the help of HankMed in this time of crisis.

Jackson, who has appeared in Broadway shows such as Damn Yankees and Xanadu, owns an impressive small screen resume as well.

It includes projects from HBO's Behind The Candelabra to the Ryan Murphy pilot, Open. He's enjoying having a busy summer overall, as Jackson has been appearing at events like this week's Trevor Live in New York City and his current Music Of The Mad Men Era tour.

Royal Pains is currently airing its sixth season and stars Mark Feuerstein, Paulo Costanzo, Brooke D'Orsay, Ben Shenkman and Reshma Shetty.

It airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on USA.

Royal Pains Review: Runaway

Just when you thought you had it all figured out, Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 3 threw you for a loop.

We thought Emma was only in the Hamptons to reunite with her long-lost father, but now we have reason to believe she's actually running a con.

Which side do you believe, fellow Hamptonites? Let's break it all down!

There's a pretty strong argument that Emma is there for the right reasons. After all, she did come to the Hamptons and stay in a motel and tried really hard to put on airs that she was rich. She may have told a few white lies - mainly that she was underage - but not once did she ask for money outright, denying accusations early on to that effect.

Playing devil's advocate, though, Evan let it slip that he may have paid her to actually hang out with Eddie R. This is definitely troubling, if only for the situation of uncertainty it caused. Perhaps it was her plan all along.

Then again, it doesn't seem like the payment offer extended to this new situation, which she would be free to exit at any time. I know I wouldn't; they have some pretty sweet digs, but if it was really about her and her mom trying to con Eddie R., this setup only really benefits Emma.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see, which is also true of other evolving situations on Royal Pains Season 6both of which have Jeremiah at the center.

So Jeremiah has found a new spot to occupy on the daily between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. It was certainly a quiet spot that seemed conducive to work, but now there seems to be a nice girl that might very well develop an interest in our socially awkward but lovable HankMed Medical Director.

Then again, Jeremiah may be lying to Divya about her and Sashi overstaying their welcome, both in word and action. We know it won't be long before that secret comes out.

What are the chances he still harbors feelings from Divya that extend beyond friendship? We might not know for a while, but right now it may suffice to say that some distance will make his heart grow fonder.

Lots of relationship twists and turns, but one important question remains: Is Emma running a con on the Lawson clan?
