Royal Pains Season 4 Preview: Where Do Hank and Evan Stand?

Royal Pains returns with new episodes on Wednesday, and with one pressing question on the minds of fans everywhere: What will happen between Hank and Evan, following the siblings' falling out to close Royal Pains Season 3?

Hank v. Evan

"Evan is off in HankMed 2.0, as he calls it, while I’m left in a lurch trying to piece together the remaining bits of our company so I can continue to do what I do, which is taking care of patients when they need me, where they need me," star Mark Feuerstein said on a conference call previewing the season ahead.

"And it looks like Evan is very good at being an entrepreneur and growing the business on his own and finding other doctors to replace his poor, lonely, sad brother, who is now on his own. But as I like to believe... the brothers will come back together, will find a way that they can get over this schism. And will be that much more mature and productive because of the fight that they had.”

The actor admits that Evan is "right" in the stand-off, but also seems to understand where his own character is coming from, referring to Hank as a "purist" and adding:

"What is selling out? When are you watering down your initial intention, your vision, for the sake of commerce and marketing? Those are the questions Hank is asking Evan all the time."

And what about Divya? What is her status while Hank and Evan have it out?

"All I can say to you is that it’s not for lack of effort that Evan and I try to figure out the answer to [the] question [of]: Who gets Divya Katdare? But only by watching our show will you receive your answer.”

Oh well. You heard the man, Royal Pains fans! The new season kicks off Wednesday, June 6 at 9/8c on USA.

Royal Pains Review: Foreign Accent Syndrome

Royal Pains kicked off its fourth season with a slow but riveting start that set the tone for at least the first few episodes.

"After the Fireworks" didn't simply close with an unexpected explosion; plenty of bombs were dropped throughout the entire installment, as fans happily put on their figurative sun screen and jumped on the Jitney tonight for a trip back to the Hamptons.

Hank & Divya At a Food Festival

When we left Hank and Evan at the end of Royal Pains Season 3, the two had come to blows over how the company should be run, which resulted in Hank leaving his own practice.

Coming back, we're right where we left off, and the tensions between the two brothers have escalated, with Divya desperately trying to pick up the pieces.

I think Divya's attempt to mend the broken relationship was a direct reaction to her own failure to navigate a relationship with her parents. It still hurts me to see that they're rejecting their daughter, especially when Divya is so desperate to have them back in her life, or at least act like they know her in public.

Furthermore, I think that Divya is grabbing at the fray for something that's normal and consistent. Her family has excommunicated her, Raj has a new beau (who we discovered is pregnant) and Jill is about to head to new adventures in Uruguay. Now the only family she has left, Hank and Evan, is about to break apart as well. What is Divya supposed to do if these two split up? Will she inevitably be forced to choose between them?

It only hurt more to see that even her best attempts to sit Hank and Evan down to talk to one another and work out their differences imploded when they engaged in a shouting match about having the last word. Talk about foreign accent syndrome in one of their patients... Hank and Evan can barely understand each other when they speak English!

If there's any moment that confirms my suspicion about their miscommunication problem, it was at the end when Hank sang Evan's praises, only to say that whoever was lucky enough to have Evan's talents bestowed upon them was sure to be successful.

Evan really wanted Hank to start taking him seriously and appreciate his gifts as they related their partnership and HankMed. Evan never really wanted to break up their business or continue on his own, only to have Hank see him as an equal.

Speaking of which, Rosie Nowak, faux-famed competitive eater with a symptomatic accent, was a nice and interesting medical-focused addition to the episode. So was the revelation that too much water can be bad for you. I thought I'd never see the day when water became the enemy. But, alas, it does exist!

I also appreciated Donal Logue's performance as Jill's brother, Ernie. Not only because he's a great actor, but I've wondered where he was since FX canceled the truly amazing Terriers. Meeting a new member of the McGuillicuddy clan was most definitely a welcome sight.

With the unexpected explosion below, it's useful to note that we haven't quite hit the Monday deadline, at which time Hank and Evan will make final decisions about what to do about the company. While Evan has clearly made some decisive moves towards securing his financial and business future sans Hank, there is most certainly time for him to change his mind.

I don't know about you, but I don't think that HankMed can survive not only without Hank, but with Dr.'s Van Dyke and the ever-awkward Cicani at the helm. I just don't have any faith in it.

So, TV Fanatics, what do you think will happen come Monday? Might there be a miracle reunification of HankMed? Or is it donesies for real?

Royal Pains Review: Equitable & Civil

"Imperfect Storm" was an interesting step in the divergence of Hank and Evan's career goals and plans, but if there's one thing they can agree on, it's that they both love having Divya as an integral part of their teams.

Royal Pains is shaping up to bring back not only the things we love about summer and the Hamptons, but also about the relationships we've almost taken for granted over the course of the first three seasons.

Hank Examines a Client

New patients, new doctors and new complications hallmarked our weekly appointment with HankMed (2.0.?).

What are Hank and Evan doing? In almost every way it's obvious that these two are meant to work together. They are the Yin to each others Yang. SO WHY DO THEY REFUSE TO ACCEPT IT?

Hank does the doctoring, Evan does the marketing, Divya assists and the team works almost seamlessly. It's pretty simple, people.

The disjointedness of Hank and Evan's attempts to amicably split the business only emphasize the cohesiveness they once shared. The dissension is both sad and makes me want to wring their necks.

For this reason, I am so proud of Divya taking back control of the situation by choosing to equitably split her time between them Hank and Evan's HankMed 2.0. If there's one thing that will force these two to realize they were meant to collaborate, it's Divya. Her plea to them as her second, but at this time only, family emphasized this point.

It seems Divya will be taking a new and commanding role this season in more ways than one. She attempted to reestablish a relationship with her rather unwilling mother, but the most important part is that she's developed to the point that she's willing to voice that opinion in ways she hasn't before.

Divya Keeps Evan Quiet

Speaking of taking control, it seems that Jill's attempts to change her path and proceed to Uruguay were brought to a grinding halt when she received a call that her position in the faraway land had been filled. Now without a job or a house, Jill McGillicuddy is officially beached in the Hamptons.

I have to be honest, though, and say that I kind of saw this coming. She was all-talk for more than half a season before she made actual steps to begin selling her home and finding her replacement at Hamptons Heritage. She couldn't have lingered any longer without people beginning to ask her when she actually planned on leaving!

Guest stars also abounded this episode. Donal Logue returned as Ernie and Alexa Vega made a post-Spy Kids appearance this week as a character named Hollister. Not only do I love the name, but I loved seeing her all grown up. I almost didn't recognize her!

Also, who expected that storyline involving Luke?!? Sometimes I feel like he might become a regular on the show. We've seen him about three or four episodes now and he's an interesting and clever addition to the cast.

Are you over the HankMed feud yet? Are you excited to see how things may work out?

Royal Pains saw Jill leave for a better position than she would have dreamed of, Hank and Evan fight for a new client and Divya launch a plan to try and bring the boys back together, only to find that the only appropriate course of action might be to bring in their father.

Yes, Divya sure had quite the busy hour dealing with all the changes in "A Guest House Divided."

Royal Trio

The turmoil, of course, was not strictly dealt with by Divya, as Paige made her long-awaited return to the Hamptons, albeit unexpectedly, only to find herself in the middle of the epic Lawson brother feud.

WHEN WILL THESE TWO LEARN TO COMMUNICATE??????!!!!

That's the question I've been frustratingly yelling at my television screen any time Hank and Evan appear together.

Poor Divya is so dead-set on making them come back together as a united HankMed front that she has resorted to sabotaging BOTH brothers in their separate endeavors, only to exacerbate the tensions.

She is much more devious and plotting than I think most fans, including myself, expected her to be. Personally, I like getting the opportunity to see this side of Divya.

If anything, it's Divya's plan and her gift to Jill that solidify the idea that HankMed truly is  family, and we're all hoping that it will continue to be so in the future, once this cold-snap passes.

Speaking of family, it seems Divya, realizing she is no match for sibling rivalry, has enlisted the services of one Eddie R. Lawson, who may be just what the doctor ordered to cure this chronic illness.

Henry Winkler likely returns for an extended Hamptons stay next week, and all Royal Pains fans are wondering what he could do any different to secure a cease fire.

It would be remiss of me to close this review without a discussion of Jill's long-anticipated (avoided?) departure from the Hamptons. Since I had been waiting for it since Royal Pains Season 3, I thought it would be an easily dealt with event. Actually experiencing it, however, brought up more feelings of sadness than I expected. I am actually truly sorry to see her go, even though I know what she's doing is so important.

What made the exit that much more saddening was the realization that her departure might only make the HankMed split easier, given that one of the people who was around to see it flourish was exiting in its time of need in some respects. At least as far as the emotional health of its two related contingent parts, Hank and Evan. She was a portion of the glue that held them together in some way, as Divya is, and to have her gone seems like a greater  loss in the grander scheme of things.

I place my faith that Eddie R. will function as a temporary fill-in in that capacity. It can only go up from here... we hope!?

Other Highlights:

  • Dr. Sacani referring to a potential client as morbidly obese.
  • Paige hugging Divya at the confession of her plan to bring Hank and Evan back together.
  • The return of Henry Winkler as Eddie R.
  • Divya's amazing necklace gift to Jill.
  • Evan's Bed Bug whatchamacallit cocoon for Jill.
  • Hank's scrapbook for Jill.
  • Jill's reference to HankMed as a "family" in her letter to Hank.
  • Legionnaires disease causing Evan to freakout on Hank unnecessarily.
  • Paige returning and finally getting Evan's attention.

Who's excited for Winkler's return next week?!?

Will Jill Casey Return to Royal Pains?

Following last week's Royal Pains episode, all fans of this fun USA series have just one question: Have we seen the last of Jill Flint as Jill Casey?

In an interview with TV Guide, Executive Producers Andrew Lenchewski and Michael Rauch touched on this topic, explaining why they sent Jill to Africa and what it will mean going forward.

Evan and Jill

"I think we felt we were at the point where we really owed the audience some definitive answer to that storyline," Lenchewski said. "This is a show that is about these characters trying to find themselves and chase dreams and passions. Her passion had always been to create some kind of community clinic and [she] had struggled with really creating something of her own in the Hamptons."

Complimenting Casey for handling news of her departure as well as possible, the producers also made a promise to fans. According to Rauch...

"I would say it's very safe to bet we will see Jill again at some point in Season 4. We're not quite sure in what instance and how long it's going to be for."

Visit TV Guide now to read the entire interview and learn whether Royal Pains will cast a new love interest for Hank in the near future.

Royal Pains Review: It Lives?!

Zombies, mad scientists and family matters ruled the day on Royal Pains this week.

Surprisingly, the aptly titled episode, "Dawn of the Med," did, in fact, allude to the reconciliation of HankMed's founding partners, Hank and Evan.

Hank & the Zombies

We may not have gotten to see our favorite Hampton-ites perform Michael Jackson's famed thriller dance, but we sure were treated some hilarious almost sepia-toned horror moments this episode.

Poor Evan, losing both cell service and gas simultaneously, forcing him into the unsuspecting house of an old man and snarling dog. It seemed to me that the isolated location and black wrought-iron fence should have been the first features to bring Evan pause before he even entered the home.

Lucky for him, a lovely young girl named Nell appeared to provide some certainty and normality previously absent in that situation.

I did not expect, however, to find that the poor old man was suffering from a disease that lay dormant inside him for nearly 30 years and was contracted in New Guinea, of all places.

I was also intrigued by the attempts to paint him as some sort of mad scientist, using germs for likely sinister or supernatural purposes. It was kind of funny, but severely underplayed to the point it was almost laughable. Really wish they would have decided on one genre, either mad scientists or zombies, and stuck with it. I simply think they could have done a better job in that department.

Speaking of which, the whole concept of a zombie run for charity was underdeveloped. One minute they a treating a young man who was apparently choking on a fake blood recipe he created, the next he's got an esophageal tear. What kind of charity and for what purpose they were involved, was never really discussed, and the part zombies play is only mildly apparent once the actual race itself got underway.

The bit with Hank faking being a zombie with Evan was cute and humorous, but reinforces my point about flip-flopping on the genre they wished to spoof.

They didn't necessarily have to spend a lot of time on development or zombies, but the horror stuff didn't really seem to go at all with what was going on in the character's lives throughout the episode either.

First, we have Eddie R. returning to the Hamptons, both to promote his book and spend time with his bickering boys. I have yet to decide which purpose Eddie R. wished to serve most. That said, I was surprised to learn he was allowed to maintain a blog while behind bars, and wonder if it wasn't some get-rich ploy for his post-incarceration days.

Similarly, I am unsure he really played that significant a role in Hank and Evan's reconciliation. Perhaps his presence tamed the tensions between them enough that they could level with each other by reflecting on the past that brought them closer together, mainly their mother falling ill and their father abandoning them? Maybe it was simply seeing themselves work together again?

Either way, there may be a chance that HankMed will emerge reunited and stronger than before, though we only have a tacit agreement of that possibility existing and nothing quite yet set in stone.

One thing I am still wondering about it Boris and the craziness that erupted twice at his home during the episode. Men in suits storming a departing van to gun shots in the middle of the night. It seems Boris' return to the show will bring with it some new drama concerning his family with Marissa and their son, Carlos. Why was he so obstinent about Hank treating the man who was shot. Why was he even shot in the first place, besides because he was perceived an intruder? Who was he?

Drama was also at Divya's doorstep this week... literally. The hour saw Divya and her mother reunite in secret to leave Divya's father unaware of their meetings. They ate hot dogs and had girl time at the salon, but by the end of the episode, Divya's mother was unloaded on her doorstep proclaiming she had left her husband. I know we were all wondering: WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?!

In fact, if most of the episode didn't have you asking that same question, then you must not have a pulse.

Or you're a zombie.......

So, TV Fanatics, which storyline from this episode most caught you attention?

Hank removing a bullet from the chest cavity of a John Doe that someone on Boris' security staff shot, followed by treating a patient with the ever-creative (though apparently completely real) Rocky Mountain spotted fever?

Yes, Royal Pains returned from a week off and didn't hesitate for second to remind us of Hank's talents in "You Give Love a Bad Name."

Hank & Divya Help a Patient

Much to the relief of fans wary of the civil war taking place within HankMed that opened Royal Pains Season 4, Evan and Hank put aside their differences aside and launched HankMed 3.0.

An expanded staff and expanded patient base presented Evan with unintended complications from the get-go, not the least of which were the uninvited guests who appeared in the form of Mrs. Katdare and Eddie R. Clearly there are still some bugs to work out in order to make sure that the expansion is to the advantage of their patients, and nothing less.

In the meantime, Hank and Divya tended to a peppy matchmaker with a big heart - two of them, actually - who was relentless in her attempts to set up her physician and his assistant on their own individual paths to love. And all while suffering from a tick born illness named Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Who knew such an ailment even existed?

Interestingly, this episode focused very much on the happiness of our ensemble cast in their respective lives.

This theme emerged earliest with Evan's encounter with his disorderly business meeting, which ended rather haphazardly, if it ever really began in the first place.

It appeared again when Veronica suggested the possibility of setting Divya up with one of her clients. Though she fiercely opposed the idea, her mother's admission that she had never been in love with Divya's father likely proved the final push towards accepting Veronica's offer. I know I look forward to seeing the results.

Paige's behavior was especially perplexing in this regard. Evan's interpretation that planning and executing a HankMed launch party and her over-attentiveness to his needs immediately raised suspicions. Linked to the apparently sexual advances of her boss in London, Paige admitted the real reason she returned to the Hamptons.

What I didn't quite understand about this whole encounter was in what way it impacted her love for painting or her desire to follow her dreams? The director came onto her. That should have had nothing to do with it.

Luckily for us, Evan actually had the exact right thing to say to Paige in order to encourage and be there for her, just like Hank reminded him of.

Speaking of Hank and support: Would you all support Hank in a relationship if Harper became a recurring character?

I think not. Quite frankly, her behavior at the launch party was baffling to say the least, and awkward to say the most. I get that not wanting to date another doctor thing, but her exit just felt like a moment of poor writing. I do appreciate his dissatisfaction with her parting words. I just wish she would have at least responded or playfully flirted with the idea that maybe she had more to say at another time.

Honestly, I don't want him in a relationship right now. He just got out of one, more or less, and he needs some single time.

Let's talk about Boris. What the heck is up with this dude?

Everything is so cloak and dagger with him. Why on earth is the NSA involved? And who the heck lets a guy bleed out in his backyard and almost obstructed medical attention so he really died? It's going to take a very compelling backstory for me get on board with that.

I hope the same is true for Hank, who will, from the looks of the promo for next week's episode, take him off the grid in search of the truth.

So, TV Fanatics, any clues as to what proposal Boris might have for Hank?

Royal Pains Review: Darkness for Divya

Evan attempted to land the Blackstone as a new HankMed client, while Hank tried to balance his professional life with a personal life, and Divya struggled to connect with her stubborn father with shocking results.

Indeed, Royal Pains delivered an intense episode with "About Face."

Paige Helps Evan

Evan appeared to have overextended himself this week. With an over-abundance of alcohol wipes invading his patio, plus Paige's surprise potential client, he certainly seemed to have his hands full.

Luckily for Evan, Sydney Bartlett seemed to be suffering from something that HankMed was fully prepared to treat, and successfully signed the Blackstone.

On other fronts, Hank embedded himself deeper into whatever silent dealings that Boris has managed to get himself into. Now strapped with a pager-watch, Hank is required to come running at Boris' will. I just want to know where that helicopter was headed? I thought that plotline was going to lead the episode. Instead, it ended it.

Unfortunately for Hank, it may have cost him his chance with Harper, who appeared in the episode several times. I think I liked her a little bit more this time, especially at the beginning when we saw her working out on the same beach Hank was running on; the witty banter that ensued was a fun start to the hour.

He seems to be moving on rather smoothly from Jill, which surprises me just a little bit. Not that he doesn't deserve to do so, it's just that they put him back in the game a little earlier than I expected.

Speaking of being back in the game, Divya, apparently with matchmaker Veronica's help, is back in the dating pool as well. Jim was a really cute guy. If only Divya hadn't aired out all her family's dirty laundry in one swoop, she might have had a chance with this guy. Maybe she should have arranged to meet him for some family therapy sessions? I would be shocked if they decided to pursue a romantic relationship after that little display. So instead of it being a total loss, she could at least get help on another front.

At this point, there's no telling quite where the situation with Divya's family may only grow worse after her father's potentially failed suicide attempt. It was a pretty dark route for this show to take in suggesting suicide, but I think the implications will make for some very powerful moments in the future... should Divya's father have one on the show.

That said, this was likely Reshma Shetty's best performance as Divya. The emotion was above and beyond anything we've really seen from her, from standing up to her father to mourning his current state, she really knocked it out of the park.

Where do you think that helicopter is headed? Do you think Divya's dad will make it?

Royal Pains Review: A Mango Lining?

I thought I liked where this season was going, but if there's anything tonight's Royal Pains has taught me, it's that "Fools Russian" - and not in a particularly organized way, either.

Not sure if it was the intent of the writers to deliver such a fragmented and mildly cohesive episode... or if that was some unfortunate accident that occurred on the cutting room floor. But this wasn't my favorite.

Paige & Evan Work Together

It was okay that we started with Hank having to re-sign a client whose contract was up. I was even more accepting of the fact he was a childhood crush of Paige's. But when you combine that with the constant and not even very clever or funny Star Trak references, one starts to wonder what significance it really has to the larger narrative.

This show is light-hearted and fun. I get that. I'm only asking that we keep in mind that not everyone is a Trekkie, and that themed episodes were made famous on this network by another show, and it needs to remain that way. It only works when you follow through in every aspect of an episode. This was not the episode to do it in.

On another front, you had some really random stuff going on with Boris and his Russian friend, Dmitri. I barely understood the connection between these two and some clandestine oil deal. Furthermore, I don't understand how Hank can stand to be a pawn in Boris' game? What is that game, even? It sounds like politics rather than business to me.

What will any of this reasonably have to do with Hank in the end? When this whole plotline has played itself out, I wonder if we will be able to draw a meaningful and cohesive line from the premiere to the finale and say, "Yes, Hank was a necessary element to this storyline, and it was completely necessary in the development of his, and that rest of the show's characters."

Don't know about you, but from where I'm standing, I don't think that's a question I'm going to be able to answer in a satisfactory manner.

To make matters worse, Hank diagnosed Dmitri in the most unenthusiastic and anticlimactic way possible. He just stated what he had, the symptoms that he was presenting with that constituted that diagnoses, and that was it. We were done.

I think what I was most displeased with was the fact that the helicopter landed in a less-than-exotic or unexpected destination than I was hoping. There is a minute chance I might be slightly bitter about that!

And then there's come-on-too-strong Christina. What the heck was up with that?! She's not even that cute. She's certainly not Jill. I know I said a few weeks back that I didn't want to see Hank in a relationship. This included flings with foreign interpreters, in case I wasn't clear.

To use Divya's words, there are a few "mango lining[s]" here:

  1. The plot involving Divya and her father progressed this episode in a way that directly aided in the development of her character.
  2. Divya and her father are on the road to reconciliation.
  3. Daddy Katdare did not jump from the balcony and into the pool in an act of complete and utter despair.
  4. Royal Pains has every opportunity in the world to redeem itself and this season when it returns next week.

So, Hamptonites, were you scratching your head as much as I was during tonight's episode?

Royal Pains Review: Handle It

It was all about man's best friend tonight on Royal Pains. From a dog named Stanley to a bunny named Ronnie, "Manimal" didn't fail to entertain and inform us on a variety of subjects.

Hank Works At Boris' Summit

Let's start with Stanley, the hard-sought solution to Dmitri's stubbornness about treating his diabetes. It was no surprise that Dmitri would be so resistant to treatment, given not only his political stature, but also the fact that no one wants to be stuck with a needle or other device without it being a complete necessity.

I have to say, I'm glad they came to a conclusion on the issue, as I don't think another week of Dmitri's medical issues would play very well. It was already risking being way too drawn out. Props for letting go before things became boring or repetitive.

One aspect of tonight's episode that was anything but boring was Paul Van Dyke's left-field story line involving Ronnie, not a former love over which he turned to drink, but a bunny who he loved dearly and, I must say, almost inexplicably.

While I appreciated the sincere attempt to make Van Dyke more human and accessible, I think this pushed the pendulum in the complete opposite direction prematurely.

I say that is because of the impact that his indiscretion had on Evan's ability to take up for himself and the lesson that reinforces for him in the future. While it was Paige who initially urged him to seek the truth from Paul, the fact that he followed through but then had to retract that action sent mixed signals. The simple fact Van Dyke refused to tell Evan the truth was disrespectful to him as the boss. For him to then pursue the story and exonerate Paul on his own was not the order things should have taken place in.

Hank, if I've said it once, I've said it a million times: STAY AWAY from Christina. I still fail to understand her amorousness appeal in his eyes and I'm still strongly opposed to their relationship going any further.

I also appreciated getting to know another person about whom Divya cares besides her parents. It doesn't surprise me that she owns a horse, but it was refreshing that she maintained a connection with the individual who helped her choose that horse. He was a lot like Divya in his opposition to letting go of the battle brewing between him and his soon-to-be ex-wife. Divya certainly wouldn't let go of bringing Hank and Evan back together.

Notable moments from this episode:

  • Hank milking a cow.
  • Van Dyke stealing girl glasses from the bathroom floor of a bar.
  • Evan and Van Dyke becoming "friends."
  • Van Dyke holding a ceremony at which he dispersed the ashes.
  • Hank suggesting they "Casually disperse," quickly amending that statement to telling them to "just run."
  • Van Dyke's behavior while sloppy drunk.

So, did you find Van Dyke's humanization believable, or could they have done better?

Royal Pains Review: Work In Progress

Between the fast cars, fast women and MMA fighters, HankMed found itself on a high-speed chase to tackle the concepts of "Business and Pleasure" simultaneously this hour.

Royal Pains set a lot of potential plot points in motion this episode, and it's got me wondering which ones will pay back solid dividends.

Hank Works Undercover

Take the interplay between Boris, Christina and Hank. I was suspicious from the beginning about how quickly Hank and Christina were moving. But how ridiculous is it to think that Boris was using Hank to test out his own level of feelings - or lack thereof - for Christina? Shouldn't he be over her by now?

Honestly, Boris has got a child and a woman who love him already. Why aren't we seeing more of Marissa? Boris should be more concerned about them and less concerned about an old flame. Furthermore, he should be above sabotaging another man's relationship with her. No one can tell me that Boris didn't plant that doubt in Hank's mind on purpose.

Good for Hank that he refused to be on Boris' leash any longer. It was a ridiculous plot point anyway to have Hank on-call like that. About time he drew the line! I just hope it doesn't affect them living at Shadow Pond. We've already done that once - forcing them to move out and all - no need to go there again.

Like I'm sure I've mentioned before, I wasn't a huge fan of Christina in the first place. She came on a little strong and didn't quite seem to the girl-next-door type that I envision Hank settling down with in the future. Plus, I just wasn't a big fan of how fast-moving their little tryst was.

If there is anyone I would have supported a fling with, it would have been Sam, our well-dressed undercover DEA agent. I think she's right up Hank's alley, and I would have loved for her to have hung around for more than an episode!

Speaking of hanging out, I really enjoyed the emphasis on Divya and Dr. Sacani developing a working relationship. Divya has a gentle patience for Jeremiah that makes their relationship fun to watch.

I think Jeremiah's really grown under her tutelage in many ways. He seems to want to try and connect with others on some level. I really hope that it's with Divya's help.

Now I don't want to jump the gun or anything, but what are the chances Dr. Sacani may develop a little crush on Divya? I'm kind of thinking that I wouldn't be opposed to it in the future, even if I don't see him as the love of Divya's life. I don't quite think we've dealt with the close-colleagues-in-love storyline yet. And, no, Hank and Jill don't count! So it might be fun to see play out in some form later on.

Other highlights from the episode:

  • Evan getting Gelato on the Italian leather seats of that Ferrari. Priceless.
  • Evan R. Lawson's (brief) moment of glory when he thought he won the Ferrari, only to find out that the winner was named Evelyn Lawson. Great play by the writers on that one. Did it trick you?
  • Dr. Sacani sharing his epic Ferrari with HankMed. Way to make a BFFL, Jeremiah!
  • An MMA fighter as emotional mess. What a strange juxtaposition.
  • Dr. Sacani pulling the fire alarm to keep JJ from crying in front of his opponent.

So, Hamptonites, Do you think Dr. Sacani is on the path to being the most social guy in the room? Or does he have a long way to go?

Royal Pains Review: Bucked Off

Royal Pains delivered another episode in which anything and everything that could possibly take place within an hour did.

And that combination made "Who's Your Daddy?" another scattered addition to an already questionable season.

The Polo Challenge

I've made it no secret that I've not been completely sure where this season is trying to go. From the disbandment and reconciliation of HankMed, to Hank's strange position as Boris' personal diplomatic doctor - and now a return to tensions between Evan and Eddie R. - I'm at a loss. Characters are supposed to move forward, not backward.

The way Evan treated his father was completely unacceptable. I don't know what it's been about Evan this season, but he's gotten more and more rude, obnoxious and just plain annoying as time has progressed. Sure, Eddie was acting a little too much like himself by offering his services as an opening act, but it's who he is.

Clearly the General knew about his prison time, so it wasn't like it was a devastating surprise. If he really had an aversion to the incarcerated, the dinner was likely to have not taken place at all. Shame on Evan for jumping to conclusions like that!

I feel like the less sure that the writers are with where they want things to go, the more disjointed their storytelling becomes. We've spent the last few weeks learning more about both doctors Van Dyke and Sacani, only to have neither appear in this episode. Same goes for Boris, who was nowhere to be found. While it likely would have resulted in casting overload given the several guest stars that participated in tonight's episode, the personnel discontinuity is painfully obvious.

Elsewhere, the use of polo felt highly appropriate for the Hamptons, only enhanced by the star player, Rafa, who made all the ladies swoon. He was quite the charmer, trading quick and witty remarks with Divya, and by episode's end, pulling her into quite the passionate lip-lock.

If Divya was fretting over the uncomfortable status of her dating life, I think a hot kiss from a polo player likely resolved those issues quickly!

While Divya's dating life heated up, however, Paige's family life seemed to have fallen apart before her eyes. I didn't see bombshell that dropped in the final minutes about her being adopted coming. Did you?

We all know that Paige's family life hasn't been without turmoil. From her mother's depression to her father's denial of that fact, the Collins as a family clearly have issues. Perhaps we should have seen this news coming after all.

But it provides plenty of fodder fat least. If Paige goes looking for her birth parents, we're in for a storyline the writers might actually care to follow through on!

Do you think Royal Pains has fallen of the horse? Or do you think it's riding high going into next week's mid-season finale?

Royal Pains Review: 50 Strains of Fame

It's no secret that I've warned time and again that the path of discontinuity Royal Pains has approached through Season 4 with was akin to "Dancing With the Devil," and if tonight was not the ultimate culmination of that fear, I don't know what is.

Finales of any kind are prime opportunities to tie up loose ends and unleash plots that the audience didn't see coming. But between the awkwardly executed addition of HankMed doctors and the many introduced/unexplored relationships, this finale didn't knock my socks off.

Hank Treats a Pop Star

Let's start with Divya, whose steamy moment with polo player, Rafa apparently turned into quite an evening for the usually very reserved physician's assistant. It didn't take long to see that it was becoming more than just a one-night stand. But what is it becoming, exactly? To be fair, while in her presence, I haven't actually heard Rafa say very much to Divya or even about himself. This was more true tonight than last week.

What are we going to do when he leaves? He's only supposed to be around for a week according to Divya herself.

I also don't think that every time Divya is presented with more than one thing taking place in her life, whether it be two jobs last season or now with Rafa, she should be portrayed as distracted to the point it compromises her occupation in some way. I got a flashback to when she accidentally prescribed the wrong medications to a patient in the Royal Pains Season 3 mid-season finale.

Mix that with the Lady Gaga-esque pop star, Eva and Dr. Sacani's attempts to treat her while clubbing, and it only gets stranger. I couldn't tell the whole time whether he was crushing on her the same as he was on Divya, or whether Eva was meant to be an emotional stand-in for Divya? It could even just be that he's starting to warm up to people in general.

At the same time there was the fallout from the revelation of Paige's adoption to address as well. The bombshell that dropped at the end of last week's hour had me believing it would be a focal point of this episode. In reality, it took a back seat to the hodge-podge of other plots that emerged.

Though her denial lasted a good part of the episode, Paige eventually admitted to Evan that it was taking its toll. Whether her new college digs or Evan's statement that they move forward and start from scratch together will ease her inner turmoil is yet to be seen.

Then there was the matter of Marissa and Carlos' sudden and inexplicable reappearance. While I appreciated the effort to bring them back into the mix, it seemed to me a little too late.

This feeling was only enhanced when it became clear that the most qualified pediatrician to treat the little one was also the same doctor Hank semi-stood up for at dinner earlier in the season to be at Boris' beck and call.

Hank just keeps moving from woman to woman. I don't know how to feel about it in all. The minute Jill leaves there has to be another woman in Hank's orbit; that is not the way to conceptualize a character.

I do like the pediatrician, and I hope for continuity sake she sticks around. Maybe the final few episodes in the winter will have them both together and attending Eva's concert?

Which story line interested you most this week? Which do you hope continues in the final episodes to air this winter? And are you as frustrated by this summer's run as I've been?

Royal Pains Review: Heating Up

For the first time in several weeks Royal Pains delivered an hour that didn't make me think it "Hurts Like a Mother."

While I don't quite mean to say that prior episodes were worthy of expletives, I do mean that they left much to be desired. But could our favorite summer show be headed in a new and enlightened direction?

Paige Needs Help

We'll start with the case. I loved the Jackie and Fiona dynamic. Supporting stories are only as strong as the actors who play the parts, and I really thought that this mother-daughter pair were as realistic as one can hope to see on television.

What I liked most was that Paige seemed to bond and connect with Fiona not only as a fellow college freshman, but also as someone who felt like they were on the outside looking in. Seeing Paige connect with her and care for her like she did was refreshing. I would have loved for someone to have supported and taken care of my academic life in the same situation; it was almost like something a big sister would do, and I loved seeing Paige fill that role.

Similarly, I enjoyed watching that relationship inform and transform Paige's perspective on her parents. She finally came around to a conclusion that they may not have made her, but they made her who she is as an individual now, which is the most important thing.

The only detraction from this conclusion was the out-of-left field decision that someone made to immediately introduce the birth mother who abandoned her in the same episode Paige decides that the parents she has are enough.

Are the writers out of their minds? I was so proud of the turnaround up until that point. Her appearance wasn't even probable. Paige neither initiated an investigation, nor expressed any desire to catch up with birth-mother dearest. Did the media leak that Paige was adopted and this woman suddenly decided it was possible Paige was hers? Or could this be a heartbreaking mistake?

One thing is for sure: if the look on Evan's face was an indication, it was the shock of a lifetime to have her show up at, of all places, HankMed. How did she even know to do that? So many pertinent and logical questions, so little explanation as of yet. I can't begin to imagine how this will impact Paige.

Another plot line that packed quite the punch was the one involving the continuously heating up relationship between Rafa and Divya. Apparently this is legit serious. I don't know how much more along the lines of "I love you" a man can get than confessing - in front of Jeremiah, mind you - that it will be difficult for him to sleep without Divya.

I really like this pairing, especially for the side that it brings out in Divya that we don't normally get to see, even if it does feel out of character in some regards. I think the purpose for which I like it most is the tension between Jeremiah and Divya it exposes. I thought on more than one occasion that Jeremiah was going to pass out due to an inability to handle the PDA taking place between Rafa and Divya!

Clearly Divya is unaware of the tensions and understandably so. But to see Jeremiah grow into his character and his skin is a testament to what a new character can do and bring to a show when given the proper time and development. It's definitely something worth celebrating. I anxiously await more in the near future.

The other development we've been watching is on the Hank and Harper front. I have to say that Harper is starting to grow on me. Her quick wit and charm are a great match for Hank, and it's neat to see them sort of unwind together. I've never really seen Hank openly admit he's too uptight and immediately remedy the situation with a steamy backseat romp.

Royal Pains seems to be just heating up, even as its season begins to wind down. Did the writers wait too long to deliver the goods, or was it right on schedule?

Emma Caulfield Cast on Royal Pains

Ex will soon mark the spot for Emma Caulfield on Royal Pains.

The actress (Leverage, Once Upon a Time) has been cast on a pair upcoming Season 4 episodes, USA Network sources confirm, coming on board as Winnie, a baker from New Jersey who used to date Hank.

Emma Caulfield Pic

What brings Winnie in to the picture? What effect will she have on this Hamptons-based doctor? Both good questions, both of which will be answered this December when Caulfield debuts and Royal Pains returns to wrap up Season 4.

Its final summer episode airs on September 19.
